After
many years running a small garden machinery business in St Agnes,
I was beginning to feel that there was something missing in my
life. Every year, for as long as I could remember, I had attended
an adult education evening class doing the usual French, Italian,
gardening etc. but I began to run out of courses I was interested
in. Then my eye caught Anatomy, Physiology and massage, 36 weeks
of what could be fun! My imagination was fired to study further
– reflexology, reiki, but I still wanted more.
The journey so far had all been evening classes
with no thought of a change in direction as far as work was concerned.
Everything so far had been exciting and I was beginning to see
and feel the possibilities and potential of the power of touch.
New people had entered my life and then the chance of a shiatsu
weekend in St Mawes. This was where my life changed for the better
and for good.
The next stage of the journey was a huge one,
the Shiatsu course was for three years and I wanted to do it,
but how? With a business to run, fees to pay and a mortgage.
Luck – chance – or good fortune,
call it what you will, an overheard conversation led me to some
financial help and the decision to sell the Garden Machinery shop
– spot on timing almost to the day! So no job and three
years looming, I had to make it work, there was to be no going
back.
Then came an incredible learning experience,
full of laughter and tears, of self examination, some doubt and
a great passion for the shiatsu I had chosen to devote my life
to.
My client group began to grow by word of mouth.
Organisations I had targeted motivated me in my study as they
were all regular money and yearly contracts.
The business I have today, six years on, is
booming. I see around 25 clients each week and am a director of
Cornwall Complementary Health, a Community Internet company which
specialises in bringing therapies and health promotions to disadvantaged
groups and individuals.
An area where I work for nothing is a Cancer
Charity, giving treatments to clients who are terminally ill.
To sum up, Shiatsu has been a journey of self
development, not just a technique. I have taken the principles
to heart, it is a way of life for me – relaxing, invigorating,
dynamic and empowering – No going back!
