The Devon Shiatsu Teaching Team

OLIVER COWMEADOW MRSS(T) is the founder and director of the school, and the main course teacher and Course Tutor for the Year Three Course. He is a Registered Teacher with the Shiatsu Society and a certified Dietary Counsellor and Teacher of Oriental philosophy and medicine with the Kushi Institute.

Oliver has studied with many leading teachers of shiatsu and Oriental medicine in the West, including Wataru Ohashi, Michio and Aveline Kushi, Saul Goodman and Pauline Sasaki. He has been teaching shiatsu courses in the south west and internationally since 1984, and is the author of four books on shiatsu and the Oriental approach to health.

JEAN NETHERWAY MRSS(T) is a graduate of the Devon School of Shiatsu, and a Shiatsu Society Registered Teacher. She is the main course teacher and Course Tutor for the Foundation Year courses.

Jean is also a Stress Management Consultant, using the power of a positive mind to enhance the intention brought to the healing process. Jean has done much to promote shiatsu in Devon, and has a busy practice in Paignton.

KATE BURFORD MRSS(T) trained at the British School of Shiatsu-Do and has been part of their teaching team since 1994. She is a teacher member of the Shiatsu Society and regularly sits on their assessment panel.

Kate is a past chair of the Shiatsu Society Assessment Committee and is currently an editor for the Shiatsu Society News, a quarterly professional magazine. She has a busy practice and with a yoga teacher, runs workshops for pregnant women. Kate lives in Penzance with her partner and two young children.



KEITH BELLISS MRSS teaches the anatomy on the Foundation Year Courses and physiology and pathology on the Year Two course. He first trained in Sport Science, and has been working at a Physical Rehabilitation Centre since 1990.

Keith studied shiatsu at the Devon School of Shiatsu, and now has a private practice as well as using shiatsu in rehabilitation programmes. Keith has also introduced shiatsu to the Nuffield Hospital Exeter.

SARA HOOLEY MRSS(T) has been teaching shiatsu since 1989. She trained with the Shiatsu College in London and taught for them for five years before moving to Exmoor. She is a Shiatsu Society Registered Teacher and teaches on the Year Two and Year Three courses.

Sara was a member of the Shiatsu Society Assessment Panel for four years, and is still assessing for the society.

ALEX TURNER MRSS is a graduate of The Devon School of Shiatsu and a member of the UK Shiatsu Society. He is a teacher on the Foundation Year & Year Two courses.  He has a busy practice in Bristol and Exeter and also runs Introductory courses in Shiatsu.

Alex has been practicing Martial Arts since 1977 and is a teacher of Tai Chi and Chi Kung and Classical Jujitsu. He has also practiced Aikido and Zen meditation for many years and continues his training in the UK and Japan.

The Administrative Team

RUTH JENNI is our Office Manager.  Amongst administration skills, Ruth has had an array of experience including being a Greenpeace researcher, advising on alternative funerals and drum circle facilitation.  Her interest in complementary therapies began 15 years ago before the birth of her son.



OLIVER PEDRICK is our Course Co-ordinator and a fully qualified Shiatsu Practitioner.
Oli is a graduate of the school with a background in personal development, including Life Coaching and group facilitation,.  He is a local shiatsu practitioner in Totnes and a recent father to twins.




WENDY MORRISON looks
after our Marketing. She worked in the IT industry for 15 years, then decided to change career direction to train in acupuncture at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. She qualified in 2007 with a BScHons degree and Licentiate in Acupuncture.  She now offers acupuncture in Torquay, Ivybridge and Buckfastleigh in south Devon.
